The story of Five Nights at Freddy's centers around a man named William Afton, a brilliant engineer and co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment, a company that operated family restaurants featuring animatronic mascots. Alongside his business partner Henry Emily, William helped create Fredbear's Family Diner, a small restaurant featuring the animatronics Fredbear and Spring Bonnie. Beneath the cheerful atmosphere, however, tragedy soon struck. William's youngest son, often called the Crying Child, was constantly bullied by his older brother Michael. On the boy's birthday, Michael and his friends forced him into Fredbear's mouth as a cruel prank. The animatronic's powerful jaws crushed the child's head in an event later known as the Bite of '83. The child eventually died, leaving the Afton family shattered by grief. Not long afterward, William murdered Henry's daughter Charlotte outside one of the restaurants. Her soul possessed the Puppet, a security animatronic designed to protect children. The Puppet would become one of the most important supernatural forces in the series because it later helped other murdered children possess animatronics. As William descended further into madness, he lured several children away while disguised in the Spring Bonnie suit and murdered them. The victims included Gabriel, Susie, Fritz, Jeremy, and Cassidy. Their spirits became trapped inside Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Foxy, Bonnie, and Golden Freddy. The haunted animatronics began roaming the restaurants at night, attacking adults whom they mistook for their killer. As the years passed, Fazbear Entertainment attempted to hide the crimes while repeatedly opening and closing locations. Meanwhile, William became obsessed with achieving immortality and began studying a mysterious substance called remnant, which appeared to contain spiritual energy. He built a new line of advanced animatronics known as the Funtime animatronics, secretly designed to capture and kill children. Among them was Circus Baby. Despite William's warnings, his daughter Elizabeth approached Circus Baby and was killed by the machine. Her soul then possessed Circus Baby, trapping her consciousness inside the animatronic. Eventually William sent his son Michael to an underground facility to find and save Elizabeth. While there, Michael encountered the Funtime animatronics, which had developed their own plans. They combined themselves into a single entity known as Ennard and tricked Michael into entering a machine called the Scooper. The machine removed his internal organs, allowing Ennard to wear his body as a disguise and escape into the outside world. After Michael's body decayed, Ennard abandoned it, yet Michael somehow survived due to the supernatural effects of remnant. He continued living as a walking corpse and dedicated himself to undoing the damage caused by his father. At some point after the murders, the spirits of the dead children cornered William inside an abandoned restaurant. Terrified, he hid inside the old Spring Bonnie suit. Moisture triggered the springlock mechanisms inside the costume, causing metal parts to snap into place and crush his body. William died a horrific death but did not truly perish. Instead, his soul possessed the ruined suit, transforming him into the creature known as Springtrap. Decades later, a horror attraction called Fazbear's Fright was created to capitalize on the legends surrounding the old restaurants. Springtrap was discovered and placed inside the attraction as an exhibit. A fire eventually destroyed the building, but William survived once again. In an attempt to end the nightmare forever, Henry Emily devised a final plan. He opened another pizzeria and secretly gathered all the remaining haunted animatronics into one location, including Springtrap, Scrap Baby, Molten Freddy, and the Puppet. Michael assisted in the plan, fully aware that it would likely cost him his life. Once everyone was assembled, Henry revealed the truth and set the building on fire. He explained that the trapped souls deserved peace and that William's evil had to end. The fire consumed the restaurant, apparently destroying the animatronics and freeing many of the spirits. Even after this, William's suffering did not end. He became trapped in what appears to be a supernatural prison or nightmare, endlessly tormented by the spirits of those he had harmed. Yet his influence somehow persisted. Years later, Fazbear Entertainment attempted to rebuild its reputation by creating a virtual reality game based on the company's dark history. During development, old circuit boards were scanned into the game, unintentionally allowing fragments of William's consciousness to survive as a digital entity called Glitchtrap. Existing as a virus within the software, Glitchtrap manipulated a woman named Vanessa and gradually took control of her mind. Under his influence, she became Vanny, a follower who continued carrying out his legacy. The story then moves to the mass
