The first win by Shi Yuqi was crucial to inject some confidence into the Chinese team. Had he lost and followed by Alex Lanier's victory, the Chinese would be badly shaken. Weng Hongyang's win against his arrogant opponent also helped to settle nerves. This paved the way for the Chinese victory in the doubles.
