A lot of people group AWD and 4WD in the SAME CATAGORY, but there’s actually a major difference…

The fun part: You can never have a right or wrong definition about this because almost every manufacturer and model have different ways to connect the 4 wheels. It becomes a semantic soup the longer you think about it.

Well, there is full time 4wd that does have a center diff. I'd say the real difference is the low range.

xDrive, 4matic, and new Quattros are awd systems that use a transfer case. All popular awd systems that account for a sizable portion of awd vehicles on the road. I’d hesitate to use absolutes when making comparisons

4wd cars are usually just awd cars except the transfer case and maybe differentials can lock on the fly. This allows for essentially both varieties in one car. Some vehicles are still true 50/50 4wd tho like the tacoma for reliability sake. On road its recommended to go into 2wd for those vehicles. A lot of car manufacturers also use them pretty interchangeably. But a usually true rule of thumb is awd cars will udually have a front wheel bias and will be more fuel efficient. 4wd cars will usually either be 50/50 or have rear wheel bias and be less fuel efficient but more powerful and better at towing. But those also aren't definitely true so instead of looking at the label look at the specs for the respective car to get the true answer.

once my friend told me he had a four wheel drive vehicle and i asked the detail of car and I came to know that the car was front wheel drive. He didn't know the difference between 2WD/FWD (front wheel drive) and 4WD .

4WD has lower range that limits speed but multiplies torque for rock crawling. Most can also transfer to rear wheel drive for the road. Most are also body on frame. At the end of the day, all you need is the right tyres, clearance, and a mindset to not care about your car. This means a honda civic will all terrains and road signs as bash plates can do 90% of 4x4 activities.
