I read when Mary says to Clark "I can't help you" as her having a moment of realisation that she's spent her life becoming a therapist to heal people in order to fill the hole left by being unable to help her mother's mental health issues. This is a moment of catharsis for her.

Mary did make it out, she came through async's threshold from the web series. That said, she's trapped in a new complex: async's building, and we know she's not getting out of there .

I kept waiting for some entity (Cap'n Clark) to find the "out door" that Clark so kindly marked with blue tape.... up until now being impossible to accidentally find.

This movie made me feel everything. I wanted to feel times 10. For me. I was just watching it as an alone movie ignoring the source that came before it. Every minute of the movie. I was just jaw on the floor as it constantly made me feel so uncomfortable and creeped. Just fabulous

Please tell me I’m not the only one who saw not just memories. Still, The Rooms is more of an allegory for Alzheimer’s as well as dementia, let alone through the entire lore… like Clark going “crazy” was a clear sign of dementia; as well as the rooms themselves, the lower and lower you go, things and people disappear or get confused, like that of someone suffering with Alzheimer’s. I know the pale yellow walls are associated with another novel, but those walls and their color can easily be linked to “sundowning,” a trigger of those who have dementia spells. Equally, ASYNC, much like scientist in real life have associated dementia and Alzheimer’s primarily to be that possibly being associated with type 3 diabetes. Plus, you also have the song by The Caretaker being played in the film.

I knew absolutely nothing about the Backrooms lore (my daughter said I’ve been living under a rock to not know 😂) but absolutely loved this movie. It’s crazy I love Severance and instantly picked up on the inspiration.

I think Mary is kept on by ASYNC as a therapist to the workers who experience trauma in the backrooms lol

Did anyone get some sort of inkling that when Mary zoned out at the end she realized that her Mom wasn’t crazy and there was a gateway in her childhood home? That’s what I got from my initial watch but I haven’t seen anyone say that and don’t know if that makes sense in the context of the movie 😂
