Fun fact: The “Yamata no Orochi” that Sukuna mentions during the fight is actually a folclore japanese monster that has similar powers of regeneration. It’s appearence and powers are similar to a greek hydra.

Also, when mahoraga "kept missing" it was implied that he was actually waiting for sukuna to attack, and that when his limbs get cut off, the momentum would launch them toward sukuna, as already shown with the finger and the hand that sukuna blocked

Since every Shadow can be summoned at any time with the purppose of taming them, Megumi sees Mahoraga as the ultimate sacrifice, sealing his opponent and himself in a battle against a seemingly unbeatable opponent, capable of adapting to *Any and all phenomena* given enough time and exposure to said phenomena. This explains why Megumi tried to summon it many times since the very first episode of the series to defeat an enemy too powerful and dangerous for him to defeat, after all, if he is gonna die anyways, why not take the opponent with him too?
