Fran Tarkington was the honey badger of the 70s. Larry Csonka didn't run away from defenders, he ran at them so he could hit them. He was the only running back in NFL history with a personal foul for unnecessary roughness while actually carrying the football.

Fran Tarkenton was different. First off he was a LOT shorter than most quarterbacks. Second even though he only had average speed his pump fakes were absolutely perfect. I can't even guess at how many linemen/linebackers bought into those fakes. I think (and that's just my opinion) far more than most quarterbacks of his era. Next while his speed wasn't that great because of his size he could cut on a dime and left most linemen/linebackers stutter stepping and missing him completely in the backfield or running down field. Finally he was just a tough little shit. I'm a born and raised Lions fan but I used to love watching Tarkenton giving the defense fits trying to contain him. Absolutely one of the greats (in my opinion).
