It was absurd for Margaret to say in 1963 that a prime minister had no right to advise the sovereign on his successor if a vacancy fell between elections. Before the Tories introduced a formal procedure for choosing a party leader, 'the usual processes of consultation' almost demanded input from the outgoing PM, though some had declined to express a preference. However it was unlikely that any retiring PM would have recommended an MP who could not win the confidence of most members of the Commons. In the 1940 crisis Chamberlain tried to hang on, then favoured Halifax, but eventually told George VI that Parliament was most likely to rally behind Churchill.

I hope the way his character is portrayed here is not really how it was. Except for her treatment of Diana I always loved my queen. She was my boss for 20 years and I saluted her flag every morning at colours with the words "morning Liz".
