DOOM runs on everything. Well, almost everything. The SNK Neo Geo AES console is a 2D sprite pushing beast, but when it comes to 3d, it's not architected to handle it. However, with some hardware tricks it IS possible to build a simple raycaster that runs on Neo Geo hardware, but does this mean Doom is possible? In this episode we discuss the technical reasons why it would be near impossible to port Doom to the Neo Geo! https://github.com/lantus/NGRayEx https://stefan-gloor.ch/voip-phone-hack https://github.com/GaryOderNichts/alarmo_doom https://www.copetti.org/writings/consoles/neogeo/ https://wiki.neogeodev.org/index.php/Sprite_shrinking Social Media Links: ► X : https://x.com/ModernVintageG ► Threads : https://threads.net/ModernVintageGamer ► Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/ModernVintageGamer ► IG : https://www.instagram.com/modernvintagegamer/ ► BandCamp : https://modernvintagegamer.bandcamp.com/ #DOOM #NeoGeo

This is super interesting. When I was in the military in the States, I was a radar repair technician and I got Doom running on the Radar Control Terminal. That's not as impressive as it sounds, as it was basically a super durable laptop, but it couldn't have been any better than a 486 or maybe a Pentium. Still, it gave us a lot to do in our downtime. The radar's "manual" was also a laptop, and I loaded that up with roms and stuff.
Tony Stark got Doom to run on a Casio watch!! In a cave!!
"so i did end up building a simple raycaster on the neo geo" lol
We just need John Carmack to look at it for a few seconds and his multi-dimensional super computer brain will shape reality to allow the ultimate DOOM port on the Neo Geo.
Curiously, your raycasting approach is exactly what Traveller's Tales did for Toy Story for its own 3D level.
0:29 I think you mean *deprecated* not "depreciated". You are talking about software, not doing your taxes...

But I think do it "with extra hardware" is a totally viable solution, so long as that hardware is built into a cart you plug directly into the console like any other game. That's how Doom works on SNES, especially the modern rerelease. I think it would be acceptable to have a Neo Geo version of Doom handled similarly.
Even the SNES needed extra chips in the cart to run Doom... Are there any Neo Geo games which have extra chips in the carts which could be repurposed to make Doom possible?
Can't believe YouTube hid this from me for 25 whole seconds
I love how you take complex programming issues and break it down simplistically so that non-programmer/tech types can easily follow and understand. This was a fantastic video and I agree that we should not rule out a port.
