Psych nurse here: Lobotomy is a false comparison. Lobotomies were used to calm or silence patients, but it destroyed a part of the brain, altering personality, cognitive functions and more, it was butchery. Thorazine lowered the dopamine production, the main cause of manic schizophrenia. It’s closer to depression in a bottle, lowering every activity, mania, happiness, libido. That’s why nobody wants tot take it, it dulls the brain. But it’s reversible, not like a lobotomy.
Ive seen folks on it. Turns people into zombies (sans appetite). For those who are frequently violently psychotic this is the last result.
I used to laugh at live, laugh, lobotomy until I met with someone who had gotten a lobotomy way back when. Now I can't look at lobotomy jokes the same. It's actually so sad and terrifying what it does to a person.
There is a part 2 posted with more info on the lobotomy and Thorazine :)
In psych class I learned they called it a Thorazine Shuffle; it turned people into zombies that would just shuffle around.
"Thuggin' 'til I die, these streets got me cravin' thorazine" -Tupac
I was repeatedly injected with that as a teen. Can confirm, the stuff works👌Unfortunately, it didn’t get me high; rather, it induced a noticeable ‘calm’. Given the circumstances at the time, it was needed.
Girl. They still make that and give it to people in psychiatric hospitals. And it doesn’t permanently affect you. It’s not an artifact. My Mom takes it when she has hallucinations. I take its little sister, Seroquel. Anti-psychotics are a valid form of severe mental health assistance. Don’t be out here terrifying people off their meds. Also, asylums were rough and needed reform. But they mostly shut down because of Regan. 🤷🏼♀️
They still use it today, but we have more options now too, seroquel, lithium, topimax, risperidone, haldol and more.
They use to hive this to kids in group homes in the 90s
Sweet, I'll take 12
i could never keep that nearby the intrusive thoughts would win and i’d eat one
Ah, thorazine. The 3-Day Vacation you won’t remember.
Fun fact: Thorazine is still used, and an off label use is also for unstoppable hiccups.
Well it was more comparable to a chemical straightjacket than a ‘lobotomy’. It was heavily sedating and not permanent so using terms like lobotomy with vague references definitely misleading.
They still use thorazine
Sounds like a good time! Let’s go! 😂
Lol they still make Thorazine. I was on it. Its 100% NOT a lobotomy in a bottle. What are you doing??? 😂
I've taken this! My old coworker who went to prison for murder had to take a LOT of it every day, and he would talk it up like it was recreational. I tried one one time and felt incredibly slow, but not bad in any way. Just slow. Never took any of em again, but I got plenty of his megadose Ritalin!
