SailGP is a great sport, but when things go wrong the organizers look very very amateur. Awful weekend of avoidable promotional failures. The sailors at least deserve better than that. I seem to recall NY wasn't much better last year for different reasons. Maybe get a better location for next year.

I know and understand right of way rules, but those rules weren’t created to accommodate 12 boats line abreast across a finish line barely long enough to hold said boats all moving at 30 to 60 knots. There should be a special SailGP rule that prohibits boats from doing what Italy just did. Given the proximity, speed and congestion, boats should not be permitted to cut across the field at the start line. It’s my belief that if TeamUSA had turned in time to avoid Italy they would have collided with Canada and both Italy and Brazil would still have piled into TeamUSA and there would have been four wrecked boats. Italy may have had RoW, but the move was monumentally irresponsible and should be illegal in the SailGP format.

Not a big fan of TeamUSA, but I couldn’t in good conscience blame them for that absurd stupidity from Italy. I think there should be some special start rules created that you can’t just abruptly turn and cut across the field at the start line because you’re early. That’s just dangerous and incredibly difficult (if not impossible) for the whole field to react to.

To condense the start line so that it's only just wide enough to accommodate all the boats is blindly stupid and contributes to the crashes

Just pathetic: - pathetic rules - pathetic racecourses - pathetic race management - pathetic coverage SailGP needs to improve a lot. Take a leaf outa AC40 Racing: Propper racecours, propper upwind starts, propper race management. Just keep ALWAYS the overall helicopter angle, oterwhise you cannot follow what ist happening by these long on board shots. And in sailing the speed is in kts, it always has and it always will be.

A complete disaster of a weekend in almost every regard. Hard to take this event seriously.

I bet Robertson never misses his exit.

My guess and it's only from an armchair sailor who only knows what he sees on here, that the reason no penalty in the last would be given one to great Britain would have only meant to drop behind Australia and wouldn't have mattered because they already were. Then when Australia crossed they would have been made to go behind the great Britain team which would have been a bit unfair. I think the pommie skipper worked that out

Rules should change, because what Italy did was reckless and endangered lives. I don't give a shit about rules that apply nicely to slow, non-foiling boats. In a congested pack of such fast, large, foiling boats, there must be a point at which such a sudden and drastic course change is considered reckless, not strategy. I don't care that it's not as objective as the upwind rule, it's about preventing people from getting killed due to reckless maneuvers, and it wouldn't be the first time a rule has been changed to protect people's safety and lives.

Why are my predictions from years past coming true this season?? Stop with these sardine-can courses. Give these machines the proper distances to stretch their legs. That could have been a disaster with another group of severe injuries and months-long repair times. Tired of repeating this warning over and over. Congrats to Australia; extremely well executed.

WTF Four boats over the line @ 0secs, second race . No penalties called??

What a crap officiating decision. No rules I have ever seen allow a boat to gybe to port right in front of a starboard boat without an obstruction coming into play.

Germany tried so hard to screw Canada at the starting line that they screwed themselves.

And once again, the USA causes an international incident with weapons of mass destruction.

As fast as these boats are they need a bigger course. Some songs last longer than some of these races. And since when do races start on a reach instead of a beat to weather.
