Im in the situation where I make too much money to qualify for “affordable living” but cant afford “market rate”. When I was in scbool my parents made too much money to qualify for “free lunch” but struggled to pay for my lunch. The middle sucks.
I make 36k-38k a year. There are definitely people on food stamps living better than me.
The real trick is convincing the rest of us that hard work is rewarded.

It was a rough transition going from food stamps and free housing to making too much to qualify, but still not enough to survive with 3 little kids. However, I grew each year. Now, I am firmly upper-middle class, have a lot of disposable income, and take vacations twice a year. Taking a leap of faith to advance myself and leave subsidies behind paid off for me, and it can for others too, but it is scary. It was a hard 15 years but worth it!
This is why assistance shouldn't be all or nothing - it should taper off across middle class income levels (or tax brackets should start at higher income).
