Malaysian Cuisine: Making Sense of Southeast Asia's Most Complicated Food Culture(s)

Food

Please "Like" if you enjoy the video, subscribe to the channel, and turn on notifications! - If you ask ten people in Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Johor Baru the question of "what is Malaysian food?" you might get ten different answers. In a vastly diverse country where the melting pot never melted, each village, district, or neighborhood might have its own distinct cuisine- from a dozen versions of Malay-Chinese, to the Mamak Malay-Indians, to the ethnic Malays themselves, and that's not even mentioning the countless tribes of Borneo; sixty percent of the Malaysian landmass in the provinces of Sabah and Sarawak. In this video, our goal is to find the common themes, to try the iconic specialties and to make sense of the concept of Malaysian food- whatever that actually means. - Please consider supporting OTR on Patreon and thanks so much to anyone who does; your support truly keeps us going. http://www.patreon.com/OTRontheroad Website: http://www.OTRontheroad.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/otr.offtherails/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D - 0:00 - Introduction 1:20 - The Melting Pot that Never Melted 4:05 - Nasi Lemak 8:14 - Breakfast 10:10 - The Golden Peninsula 12:16 - Kopitiam 13:58 - Laksa and Beef Soup 19:34 - Malacca 21:04 - Curry 23:51 - Itik Salai Masthar 26:34 - Masak Lemak with Smoked Duck and Beef 31:20 - The Oldest Recipe 33:46 - Ikan Bakar Malacca 36:41 - Borneo 39:41 - The Best Meal We Didn't See Coming 44:10 - Linopot 49:54 - The Reason for the Problems 54:37 - Roti Canai 1:00:33 - Malaysia 1:02:26 - Bak Kut Teh 1:06:13 - Last Thoughts - Video Credits: https://youtu.be/j_aqSHNz4-g?si=WYeScLqgbsOocqW- https://youtu.be/CcOts80eQRo?si=jOdyBHh9BIkwlZTf https://youtu.be/nikqbmne7g4?si=PD26pnwbIrQOnMdu https://youtu.be/C_5kC3J4T3o?si=3B0OKm5I6uGJiqVE https://youtu.be/QdXIXhlfwno?si=1D6KYaltDTZ5lwYl https://youtu.be/_lZjm3mMl3g?si=sHa3DQk-2zLUkHSB https://youtu.be/KImOCQV2PMA?si=5L2R30xhoDXP0Qq1 https://youtu.be/39a36uleWw4?si=4xw_pzjopxx74qzB https://youtu.be/rLHAdiNzS1A?si=8PaFRhDeVCP8-J0P https://youtu.be/XbgFIkhMM3s?si=MW7HF8_NciBf7XVa https://youtu.be/thcOtLjzwac?si=WCK5aw1dnstK5XfG https://youtu.be/KG6UhxYj0Sg?si=7ppaeHXDsMRDgm59 https://youtu.be/ks5RhTuD2BE?si=WAE48hrApzuazcrW https://youtu.be/DW-vktCDrrs?si=gHsesF12FHyxFfwD https://youtu.be/TiQBTesZUJQ?si=AF1Cbb8jDpqO8wE6 https://youtu.be/lqKjGCJfpnQ?si=lAN2YnMtQpc0RyUg https://youtu.be/Sthfu4aQkc4?si=zea9t717px1ZJWDr https://youtu.be/zEz0pca2Uho?si=R3y4Yb7ZODG9O7LC https://youtu.be/pfqDfFHK7Yc?si=B8BG6TfZRXWsgLpc https://youtu.be/mYfPMkKroeI?si=09hZLwCrVgThQivz

My wife and I are both 'foodies' and were lucky to live in Penang Malaysia for a year. This video brings back so many great memories. Thank you.

❤ Just a note to say my wife and I appreciated the love and care you put into making this video. Probably the most balanced, well researched take on Malaysian food for a while. Bourdain would be proud.

Thank you. Your content is very well researched, narrated and you’re realistic as well. Not overly enthusiastic n aww wooow wah in everything 😂 instead you’re narrating it with some restraint, lots of objectivity n right level of information 😊

Hey Adam, I hope you read this. Since Bourdain died, I have been searching for an informative travel show. You’re awesome and in your own way. Keep it up. I love the production, writing and eloquence you carry

Thank you for giving me an insight into my heritage. I see glimpses of my roots when I save enough annual leave to visit, but little do I know about its origins. Love this. Makes me proud.

I'm so glad and surprised that you managed to find Sabahan food in KL! I lived and worked in Sarawak, near the Sabah border so the indigenous people living in the town where I was will have a mix of both Sarawakian and Sabahan dishes with their rice (which looks exactly the same as yours, only mushier, stickier and completely wrapped in leaves (nuba laya) so that it's easier to transport and eat when they're foraging in the forest). And the dishes are always SO unbelievably good. Like it's a crime that this cuisine is still little known in Peninsular Malaysia. The fermented pork (pekasam babi) in particular is so so good. Hope you get to try it next time!

Grateful to Adam and the team for telling Malaysia’s story the right way through real, authentic food vendors, not hype. Because true authenticity goes beyond skin colour, it lives in the passion, heart, and respect behind every dish. As Malaysians, we should feel proud and happy when people from different ethnic backgrounds take the time to learn and master each other’s cuisines. It shows respect, unity, and a genuine love for our shared food culture. In the end, only those who are sincere and committed will stand the test of time, and customers can recognise authenticity, they’re not easily fooled.

i am speechless, i don't know what to say. I could definitely tell, you did an insane amount of homework and effort making this video happen. Introducing races, food, history, culture, norms, story telling, abit of everything. I could proudly say, what you did in the video, makes yourself more Malaysian than I do. This is going to help so many people out there who wants to understand more about Malaysia. We are so much more than just KLCC and Twin Tower...

Holy moly East Malaysia is included????? I'm so happy right now, most Youtubers covering Malaysian food only do Peninsula and forget we exist! And the historical photographs!!! And the historical citations!!! Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh

Some of the best food i have had in my life was one year in college when i celebrated Thanksgiving with a group of Malaysian Chinese students. The food was so incredibly good, and i cant even remember all the dishes. They taught me how to use chopsticks and how to eat rice with chopsticks. I was a very sheltered white kid from the middle of nowhere and I'll never forget it.

Yippee! It's so nice to see my favourite cuisine getting some love! I once embarked on a project to find a recipe for and cook every regional variation of laksa in Malaysia.... I had to give up as there were just too many subtle variations!
