My grandson graduated kindergarten and I wanted to make him something special. This cake was absolutely delicious! For the frosting I did swap the 4 ounces of butter for cream cheese and left out the cream (I used a little water to replace it). The frosting was outstanding, so creamy. My husband and I are not big on chocolate but this cake changed our minds. My husband immediately said to me this is fantastic! John has never failed me in any recipe, he is my to go to for anything I need. I take his tip and do what he says. Especially weighing out everything and never over mixing my batter. His banana bread is fabulous, which I will be making today and freezing several batches.
Ingredients For the Cake: 2 cups all-purpose flour (240g) 2 cups granulated sugar (400g) ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (50g) 1½ teaspoons baking powder 1½ teaspoons baking soda ½ teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup whole milk (240mL) 2 large eggs ½ cup vegetable oil (120mL) 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 cup boiling water or hot coffee (240ml) For the Chocolate Buttercream: 1½ cups unsalted butter room temperature (338g) ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (25g) ¼ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 6 cups powdered sugar (680g) 3 to 4 tablespoons whole milk (45-60mL)

I grew up with a mom who was always in a rush, she couldn’t stand us being in the kitchen with her, so I think that caused for me to literally stress about making food. Note: you don’t always mention how many ml/grams a cup of an ingredient is, so sometimes I’m eyeballing it 😅. Europe problems 😂
Thank you so much! I made it, and it turned out amazing. Instead of using 240 ml of whole milk as the recipe suggested, I used 120 g of heavy cream and 120 g of sour cream.
