I'd certainly ride in a car with no steering wheel. But I don't want to own a car without a steering wheel. Although I have and use FSD, sometimes I still prefer to drive myself...it's that simple.
Still not sure what's "over"
I bought my 2021 Model 3 about four months ago, and I have driven it almost 99% on FSD. This is with "old" technology, which some Youtuber tend to turn their noses up at. This "old" technology has driven me across the Canadian prairies, Winnipeg to Kelowna and return (3900 km) at night, through blinding rain deluges and through 90 km windstorms. As long as I could see the blue line stretching in front of the car, I was confident that FSD could see a head - even if I couldn't. Regardless of age, FSD is a marvelous piece of technology; however, I will admit to being curious as to what version V14 lite will bring.
Tesla needs to use fleet learning to update maps. In my area it’s a year or more behind finding finished routes even with thousands of Tesla vehicles using the new road every day.
I think door handles are necessary for passengers or emergency responders to open the doors of a wrecked car. China has mandated mechanical door handles starting in 2027 for safety reasons.

One of the roadblocks that hasn’t been discussed as far as I know is the auto insurance industry. If something like the Robotaxi takes off it could decimate the auto liability industry. After all, if I am in a car with no controls, I can’t be held liable for ANYTHING that happens.

The bottom line is you need massive real world data .... MASSIVE, not just synthetic data, to make things really safe. Synthetic data augments the real world data, not the other way around. Do you want to trust a vehicle that is 98%-99% safe or one that is 99.999% safe? Those last few 9's make all the difference.
I wish they would just start cranking out cybercabs with steering wheels so I can buy one now, and not have to wait for all this regulatory friction before unsupervised FSD is legal everywhere.
Most people fail to realize what a huge boon this will be to those who cannot drive.

The statement that what ultimately matters is "cost per mile" is incorrect. That metric is of secondary consideration. What really ultimately matters is CONVENIENCE. This fact is what invalidates the premises underlying Elon's predictions about Robo-Taxis. The bottom line is that the private personal vehicle is the most convenient form of transport. Robo-Taxis are ultimately just taxis ... with all the shortcomings, inconveniences and use cases of that form of transport. The same folks that have a need or desire to hail a cab or ride-sharing option today will be the ones utilizing Robo-Taxis. Tesla will likely come to dominate that market but will be unlikely to expand it by much, if at all.
I think the Robotaxi with a slight modification would make a great little mini-cybertruck, like Dad did to his Ford Model A sedan at the end of WW11.
