It is possible to run this via USB-C or other methods; hence the ports on the back. If the batteries don't work; then you could try that instead? (I'm not saying it would have worked, but it's just for future reference; in case you were not aware of it).
Nice work getting this one fixed. I'd be filing a claim against the seller though they'd realistically drag the entire process out and eventually force you to return it in an act of cutting their nose off to spite their face (even though they'd have to pay the return postage).

I would contact the seller, cause this is not untested, it is damaged and not all parts included.
Putting batteries in and checking it is classed as an Ebay untested item, Everyone knows it was tested as no one will sell something broken without testing it first. If working, they would get more for it.

The melted bit looks like they heat staked the battery compartment to the back and just didn't make a very neat job of it.

I noticed that you aren’t using your WERA screwdriver, but instead some no-name unidentifiable black one. I have just bought the WERA one because of your recommendation. I feel mis recommended now. Oh well.. But I love your craftsmanship. I can never solder two wires just in mid air. They always flip away. You’re a true artist.
My suggestion it's a question a fellow before buying the item can sometimes they lie to you, And by lying to you, they are running a scam.
