Every trip, every train ride, every brutal training camp, it’s always been for running with a performance over everything mindset on this sub-2:10 marathon journey. But recently I realised something ridiculous… I’ve never actually explored Japan properly. And apparently there’s one place that Japanese runners escape to every winter when they need sunshine, huge mileage and a mental reset from the chaos of mainland training. So today, I’m heading deep into tropical Okinawa to find out why...

I've heard of ultra-running described as an eating contest so I'm thinking you'll do pretty well when you make the transition.

what i came up with, using bike as recovery just as you; i swaped my chainring to a 53t so it increases muscular demand. idk about yours tho

I've been wearing P20 suncream for hot/sweaty running days and it's crazy how well it's worked. I'm pasty ginger too and it's the first I've had that stops me burning on a run/cycle

Sun sleeves or long sleeve UV jerseys are the way to go if you're out riding for many hours! Otherwise applying sun screen every hour gets old.

re: Sunscreen You need to reapply sunscreen every two hours for it to work optimally. Even more often, maybe hourly, if you're sweating a lot. So yeah: you need to cover up or lather up on sunscreen more often.

Mate, did you think of re-applying sunscreen every 3h or so? Just once doesn't do the trick if you're out in the sun for that long. Especially not as a ginger.

If you can’t get your heart rate up on the bike you should try “pedalling harder not faster”

The year is 2032. Jake is now 680lbs having long given up the foolish obsession with running and is a full-time scran to Japan evangelist
