Dance marathons were one of the darkest forms of entertainment during the Great Depression. 🫣 Held across the USA throughout the 1920s and 30s, couples would dance almost nonstop weeks or months. In 1933, Callum DeVillier and Vonny Kuchinski won a marathon in Massachusetts after dancing for FIVE MONTHS STRAIGHT (3,780 hours).... taking home a $1,000 prize (roughly $24,000 today). 😱💰 Contestants were often unemployed and desperate, entering for the cash, free meals and somewhere to stay. Audiences paid 25 cents to watch exhausted dancers hallucinate, collapse, and mentally break down from extreme sleep deprivation (as contestants only slept in rare 15 minute windows). After the d3ath of Homer Morehouse after 87 hours of dancing, cities like Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York began banning them. 🙅🏼♀️

At what point do we stop calling it the Great Depression and start calling it World Depression 1?

It's insane, how the audience paid money to see how people were tortured or collapsed - reminding me of the medieval age

Ohh In Gilmore girls there's an episode where the town promoves an event like that! I didn't know that it happened in real life.
