They compared SF6 tournaments to the wrong sports. It's more like Nascar with multiple entries per single day events that end with winners, and points to get into placings for the bigger event. Top competitors get knocked out in events during the race, and that is what leads to upsets. Also for anyone curious of what FT3 looks like, watch Tampa Never Sleeps where nearly every week ends with Knuckle Du vs Punk, except when they're out of town.

ft1 pools through grand finals no resets

Kids are on tablets Watching YouTube at the age of 4 and 5 now so it's not too surprising. You start early and you specialize in it. A lot of fellow old heads are learning the hard way. 💀

I'm a big supporter of FT3 instead of FT2, Brian pretty much said all my thoughts on it, the logistics argument seems very weak to me especially if you only do it after pools. Most time is the waiting for matches and the actual logistics of the tournament. Having more rounds will not be that much extra time and it will give the viewers a way better viewing experience in both the ratio of gametime vs wait time and in quality of gametime. If someone runs through the other person the 1 more round barely matters anyway so even for the lopsided matches I don't think there is that much of a negative effect while for the close matches there is so much more positive effect. For players of all skill level this just means you get to play more going to a tournament as a beginner playing you two FT2 matches is already so little tournament experience I think the FT3 will mostly be nice for the non pro's. Even if it will be harder to break through you get more time at it to learn and grow. The only downside I really see if for the loser bracket demons that need to go from pools to grand finals and the added fatigue. But I think most of them would prefer FT3 anyway as soon as they lose. Rival of Aether drama feels so overblown to me and I actually think it's sick to get an indie game so high at EVO. Would be interesting to see the DQ percentage afterwards since I do not think Aether will be an outlier in DQ just because of people trying to get a free pass. All the companies are trying to push their game and get it higher at EVO but because it's an indie and through Ludwig it is just more visible. Isn't EVO a premier for capcup? That boosts the numbers too, in this case its just the reverse where EVO is like the capcom cup for Aether. A chance at winning a million is also an external incentive to boost your entree number

Imo the argument on FT3 in top 32 is open and shut. Tekken 8 did it and recently the tournaments have been a lot more fun to watch, and that game is arguably less volatile than sf6 despite what Tekken players would have you think.

on the Mai topic I just don't want a non-Street Fighter character being top tier, it's just not a good feel to play Street Fighter and the big part of the meta is a character not even from the series. I'd rather have Luke or JP be top meta that a guest character

Say what you will about the ROA2 situation, but it was the biggest side game last year despite being smaller than the surrounding majors for the game. I would have been surprised if the game was outside the top 6 in general.

I figured strive was lower because of the Saudi stuff. Especially in the U.S there seems like a decent amount of lgbt+ players who won't be going. The top player also seemed to care more about it than SF6 or Tekken players at least that was my impression from Twitter and YouTube

I know im a couple days late but two of the blanka players where Diagos prep partners for the FT10. The ones I remember are KingsVega and Takagi. Diago was talking about KingsVega being the established scary JP Blanka and Takagi I think learned blanka for the prep? He talked about them both in his training prep video on Diagos channel

40:45 little correction. Booce was talking about stMP, not crMP. Function wise I think it's more comparable to Ryu's or Ken's 5HP. The thing about Mai's stMP is that the range is great, it's disjointed, the recovery is 15 frames, and it's Special Cancellable. It's function overlaps with most of her other buttons buttons and is better than most at their job. It's similar range to stHP while being less punishable. Safer than crMK and goes into fan pressure or L Ryuuembu seamlessly. crMP is forward moving but can be stubby. It is cancellable so it's way safer than her standing kicks. There is almost no reason for her to press any other button in most situations. Fans have been nerfed so they have spots to counterplay and people like Blaz have shown ways to do that very effectively. Her stMP is just an unbeatable button, and Mai players that know how to use it and space it out right can become extremely oppressive.

An upset in ft3 is more hype than ft2

Just let the TO''s vote on whether to run more FT3 because they are the ones that end up with the thankless job of needing to make it work,

Ludwig is the kind of guy that takes something other people are interested in and makes it his entire personality, he wears a dodgers jersey everyday because the dodgers are "cool" he has zero personality of his own and takes on whatever personality will pad his bank account the most, the snakiest of snakes

I think idoms right that with a game like sf6 people would just say things like “blanka is busted” if we lived in a world where everything was ft3 and menard was a top 3 every single tournament, as an example. I agree with Brian that storylines are more exciting. The difference with games like melee, umvc3 etc is that they can’t be patched. The game is what it is and the people that have stuck with those games know and except the balance of that game for what it is which I think allows the focus to shift more towards the player and less towards “xyz character needs nerfed”.

1:01:34 I know this discussion can’t really happen because of the meter balance of games, but I would be curious to see street fighter with FT3 rounds to win a match like tekken as a way to help consistency

Love the banter! When is Brine going to take part on a tournament? Wish he had gone to Combo Breaker.

I would love to see a tournament where they setup the brackets to where every player in seed 128 and lower are on one side of the bracket and have a losers bracket. The other side of the bracket is every other seed and they have no losers bracket. The winner of the second bracket would get a winners spot in the first bracket. The second bracket would run first to save time for TOs. Sounds like hell to setup but I’d pay good money to make it or something similar happen. Love the podcast btw.
