Rachel reminds me of so many girls who bullied me in school

18:08 i think she actually *did* suspect that Charlie was talking about himself and thats why she went after him to see if he was okay, and then also why she “went along with” the sexual harassment. Charlie asked about a hyper violent hypothetical then freaked out in a violent way when she didn’t answer the way he hoped she would. i can imagine that she suspected he was an almost-shooter and thus chased after him to see if he was having thoughts about doing something violent. Then he thought maybe he could get away with sexual harassment because she mentioned that she was had an affair with a married man.

if the marketing told us what her secret was half of the people wouldnt watch it. it was the whole point to hear it first together with the characters.

Im not from the USA, so I guess that makes me have a different reaction to Emma's secret because, even tho it was a horrible thing to plan, what Rachel did was much worse to me. I was really confused by the reaction of the other three, mostly because It felt unfair, and that feeling made me uncomfortable for the rest of the movie, and got worse when i got to understand where teenage Emma's thoughts came from and the relieve she felt when she finally could let those things go because she was a part of something, which is one basic human need. I would've called the cops for Rachel, that poor kid deserved some compensation lol

I know it's because I'm not from the USA, but me and my friends didn't care for Emmas secret and thought that the name of the movie was because the characters were making a drama out of something that didn't happen, especially when every other character did something that actually affected others

i’ve always understood everyone does bad things including me, that said i can’t judge anyone based on the things they do i could never be mad at anyone. the hypocrisy in this movie was genuinely triggering i’ve only in recent years started experiencing “drama” all it is is people judging people to feel like a better person all in a loop and it only gets worse.

I loved that The Drama shows how easy it is to get inside that type of community online, to get access to guns and to plan that kind of violence, specially in the USA - and yes, it is a problem of that country, despite of what Rachel said about “blaming the US”

It's not much about school shootings; it's more about sinning in general, and whether someone who had sinful thoughts and almost acted upon them should be held accountable. A great philosophical dilemma

I dunno this is kinda weird. My husband admitted to me at one point he wanted to shoot up his high school. He was heavily bullied as a nerdy guy, got into 4chan/8chan and his parents rather fight with each other than show any love to him. He was glad he didn't have easy access to guns. He said it wasn't until he started smoking and became more chill at 20, did he let go of the anger inside. It's pretty scary how much more easily accessible weapons and the 4chan ideals are nowadays.

As much as Rachel's reaction is obviously hypocritical and over the top, I feel like the comments absolving Emma of *any* responsibility are also disingenuous. No, the movie does not frame Emma as completely okay and innocent just because she didn't go through with it. The movie makes it so clear that it's not only that she had dark thoughts - she went through with it to the point of training for it and bringing a gun to school, and only backed out because someone beat her to it. I'm not saying that makes her completely guilty, especially since she did not end up hurting anyone and grew as a person later in life. But treating it as some kind of black-and-white situation where Charlie is the devil for being disturbed and Emma is completely innocent is simplistic to the point of being stupid.

I keep on trying to find something Emma could have said that would have elicited an emotional response from me, a German. I think in our context it would have been something like thinking of joining ISIL back in the days, but even that is still quite removed from my daily experience. Insane to me that this movie's plot device would only work in the US.

I high-key love Charlie's speech about school shootings being cultural to the USA, i couldn't agree more

Something I wish the movie would've engaged with that it didn't engage with at all is that Rachel and Charlie's acts are what create an Emma in high school. I wonder if they found out the kids that they bullied had planned school shootings as well, would they have reacted differently to Emma. Maybe they would've felt more remorseful about the things they did, because they seemingly didn't feel bad at all.

I saw this last night with my husband. We were the only people in the theater. We absolutely loved this movie. It was so well done and nuanced with the couple dynamics and moral questions posed. The characters were subtle and human. The two leads gave incredible performances. Especially the post wedding scenes in the apartment and diner. Incredible.

why is no one talking about THE GENIUS of having that cable jump right when emma's father was mentioning his rifle? I was so on edge I jumped from my seat!! genius

Just to say: any movie you see Zendaya in, you can assume the character was originally written white unless explicitly said otherwise. She actively avoids movies looking for Black actors and has been open about that. She takes her position as a biracial woman who fits incredibly well into Hollywoods beauty standard quite seriously and actively avoids the roles she’s feels would be taking from Black women who do not.

The character of Rachel is so interesting because she's like a deeply bad person, but constantly feels morally superior. It did really feel like real people I've known. I was having a STRONG reaction to her in the movie.

I thought the marketing was good, it made me want to know what was going to happen which is obviously the point

I'm OBSESSED with the moral situations this movie proposes. My partner and I debted this for like an hour the other day after watching it and even while being able to agree with the other's viewpoint, we still stood firm with our original points and veiws. It is a very unfortaunte situation, however, given the subject matter of this film. I understand why one of the mom's of the Columbine shooting was upset with this, and I can see how upsetting it could be to have gun violence, specifically school shootings depticted in an almost comical way, but I think it was written so intelligently, and I think this is a subject we SHOULD be discussing. I'm almost positive there are THOUSANDS of shootings that people have planned and never gone through with, which is just the horrendous, tragic nature of living in the United States. I think art should be uncomfortable, and I think gun violence NEEDS to be discussed more, one way or another because nothing seems to be coming of what is being talked about currently.

I had a realization on the way home from the movie that if it never came back to Rachel, that means that kid was not able to talk about it. And it made me realize that the kid could have been worse off than Rachel made him out to be.....which like YIKES.....
