You can actually get it without glitches by, for instance, grabbing a cork box in Shifting Sand Land and swimming in the oasis with it. However, "Metal in water with an object" cannot be done without glitches, as there are no levels with all the elements required to get that animation. You can achieve it with glitches in Jolly Roger Bay, which is the method demonstrated in the picture. 0:26 YouTube feeding me this video on 4/20 feels like a calculated move on their part.
12:06 "oh and parallel universes" like it's the most normal thing to talk about
6:59 "When you press A the game will make mario jump"
One of the craziest speedrunning stories ever. So thankful for channels like Bismuth that have a talent for discovering and laying out these stories from beginning to end so we can understand the entire narrative. "But first we need to talk about parallel universes", the creativity of the human mind is nearly limitless
When the video spends 2/3 of its time explaining four seconds of gameplay, you know it’s gonna be good
Whenever Mario does a long jump, he answers the question "Which company passed on buying Google for $1 million in 1997?"
İ love that in 22:36 the music intensifies, fitting the moment perfectly.
For anyone wondering why mario slide kicks a lot in this tas, it’s literally one of the fastest methods of movement if repeated until reaching max speed, beating out diving, long jumping, and double kick dives. The average speed of the SK was 89.725, as compared to Jump Dive + 2 Jump Kicks (Average speed 52.7749), Jump Dives (Average speed 51.45), and Long Jumps (Average speed 50.4). "Oh this will be a fun vid" *Stops literally 2 seconds into the run* "This is gonna be good"
This is unironically one of the funniest videos I’ve ever seen, only because of the juxtaposition of the intricate explanations and the spaghetti ass gameplay
Ok, now I need a Math and Physics diploma just to undertstand how the red man opens a door
I’d like to just point out that, as someone who is currently taking a university-level programming course, as well as someone who is actively working on a ROM hack, videos like these, which break down the technical aspects of everything are godsends. You and Retro Game Mechanics Explained have taught me—and by extension the rest of the world—quite a lot about the mechanics of how games work. And now that I can actually apply these concepts to real examples, that just makes me appreciate this content even more than I already did. Every time I learn something in class, I’m able to apply these videos’ content to it. I don’t know what it is, but I take solace in the fact that I can learn things from videos about things I like: games, and breaking them down.
29:52 You answered a question I had been wondering… once inside the basement with this TAS trick, could you open the locked basement door to get into the rest of the castle, or would the game say “you need a key to open this door?” The answer turns out to be the former! I’m guessing the programmers never expected you to get into the basement before getting the dark world key, so they probably didn’t program the statement “this key doesn’t fit! Maybe it’s for upstairs…” like they did for when you attempt to open the upstairs door with the basement key.
I can't believe it's easier to open an underwater door in real life than in Mario 64
i love how sm64 save music is a MUST when explaining parallel universes. god bless pannenkoek.
Speedrunners are something else. I’m always so impressed by the things they can pull off with or without tools.
22:55 The 4 screens to visualize all the parallel universe hopping has to be the most mind-bendingly awesome thing ever. I especially love seeing the Actual Camera screen legit track Mario universe hopping. It raises an interesting question. Who's more powerful? Mario who can jump through parallel universes or Lakitu who can track Mario jumping through parallel universes?
It's absolutely delightful to me that the file theme cuts in at 12:00 for the PU explanation. It's a delightful nod
Watching this after your ABC series, it's cool to see how much more awesome power Mario gains when he's allowed to use his famous jumps. And yet some techniques like Parallel Universes are quite familiar. Fascinating how the speedrun uses similar tools to overcome a totally different obstacle: A DOOR.
So taking the 1 unit=1 cm approximation, the 3.4 million speed Mario reaches at 10:30 converts to 1020 km/s. Which is about a 300th of light speed, or two times as fast as the entire Milky Way's escape velocity!
