Family of deputy shot in line of duty gives emotional statements before shooter is handed sentence

On Thursday, the judge handed Gregory Maxwell, a sovereign citizen, the maximum sentence for shooting Corporal Lucas Watts, which totaled 183 years in prison. Back in November 2023, Oconee County deputies pulled over Gregory Maxwell for driving an unregistered vehicle. Maxwell fled from the scene and led deputies to his home on Black Bass Road, where he shot Corporal Watts in the head. Watts was given a 5% survival rate by neurosurgeons who operated on him at Prisma Health. His colleagues, who were told he would likely succumb to his injuries, described it as a miracle he is alive. This was absolutely horrific. Police officers put their lives on the line to protect and serve. This violence and dangerous rhetoric thats happening in our country has to stop.
