Walking through the forest in the rain, up stairs to Daisen Temple, following a stone path to Ogamiyama Shrine, and along the forested Sada River. I was looking for a place with a natural feel to enjoy the early rainy season and thought spending the morning on Mt. Daisen would be nice. It is a volcanic mountain that looks a bit like Mt. Fuji from some angles. Midway up the slope there are beautiful beech forests and a few temples along the trail leading up to the summit. Most hikers start here, but today I just made a loop through the forest with sounds of rain on the lush foliage overhead. The use of the colour red has me asking questions about the relationship between Buddhism and Shinto. The "liberty caps" were particularly striking. Is this a specifically Buddhist temple or a result of historical syncretism? Please forgive my naïve questions, perhaps I should learn to read. Again, I'm fascinated by the similarities and differences, but I'm very much drawn to the Japanese veneration of nature and the aesthetic that inspires.
Lovely and serene, I regret that when I lived in Japan as a child that I did not get to visit these sacred places. Thank you for posting.
