Five Italian nationals have died in a tragic scuba diving accident in the Maldives while reportedly exploring underwater caves near Vaavu Atoll at a depth of around 50 metres. According to Italy’s Foreign Ministry, four of the victims were part of a University of Genoa research team, including ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter, and two researchers. #maldives #italy #divingaccident #worldnews #breakingnews #scubadiving #travelnews #news18 CNN TV CNN-News18 is your trusted source for breaking news, updates, and in-depth analysis from around the world. only 1 of the 5 were cave certified. and this cave was at 160 ft, beyond recreational diving, and requiring extra equipment and training, and all while a “yellow” weather warning. clearly, beyond their capabilities and any common sense.
So far, everything seems to point to an error in gas management: tanks mislabeled, blended wrong, not enough for the dive etc. because whatever happened affected them all at relatively the same time. 50 meters (164 ft) is _very_ deep; well beyond recreational diving where the maximum no-decompression depth limit is 40 meters (130 ft). lots of specialized gear, training, and experience is required for dives deeper than 40 meters – and that's for dives where there's no obstructions/overhead environments like caves or inside wrecks. Deep dives beyond 40 meters in caves/wrecks requires even _more_ gear and training. My condolences to the friends and family and everyone else all six victims of this tragedy touched during their lives.
That is sad to hear, 50m down in a cave, that is very dangerous.
Going places you shouldn’t go! 😢
That diving so called instructor is definitely at fault. Very sad situation but was avoidable. He took them to the limit and knew the consequences.
Stick to robots for cave diving.
This is the single worst dive in the history of diving. No other dive has had 5 fatalities. Somewhat ironic that it was done with a bunch of people who all probably thought they were the smartest person in the room.
Devastating🙏
There are many Youtube channels describing people dying during cave diving. This looks fun, but so dangerous.
Scuba a 50m? That is a commercial dive. Just guessing but possibly nitrox used rather than trimix. And five? Certainly the tanks. What were the redundancies? There should be a dive plan about time and slow accent and deco stops. Very sad and probably avoidable.
Respects to our Italian Sisters and Brothers Condolences to their families Love from England
This is truly nuts. No one goes 50 m.
Was someone showing off or trying to impress someone? It seems like someone would have noticed this is not safe.
160 feet on air? In a cave? Insane. There is zero room for error. Were these people even certified for cave diving? Surface weather absolutely affect deep water conditions due to strong currents. Open ocean at 160 feet is nuts.
It's not tragic when you're stupid. Scuba diving is NOT cave diving. They should have known better. Is what went wrong.
There’s a huge difference being trained in open water diving and cave diving, if you’re not a trained certified cave diver, don’t go into caves
Never dive beyond your certification and skills
Such idiots, now the rescue team has to take the dangerous task of getting their bodies up. You don't dive into caves, unless you are stupid or do not care about danger or common sense.
Like Everest, why send others to die too????
Condolences 🇨🇦
