Revealed: How Maldives divers ‘were sucked inside cave & couldn’t swim out before air ran out’

Nature and animals

CHILLING footage of the Maldives divers’ final moments could finally reveal how the tragedy unfolded as rescue workers recover their bodycams. All five bodies of the Italian tourists who were killed during a dangerous cave dive in the Maldives last week have now been recovered. The expedition team may have been sucked into the complex cave where they ran out of oxygen trying to escape, a new theory suggests. The idea that the divers were sucked in does not make any sense to me. The cave is a dead end and full of water. How is more water going to flow into it?

60 metres on a single compressed air tank was bad enough but to enter a cave. Its like the Oceangate of diving.

I am beyond thankful that I don't have that thing inside some people, whatever that may be, that spurs them on to discover and explore and go places no other people have gone before.

This is unfortunate but these people knew they are engaged in a dangerous sport. They lost their lives doing what they loved most. May they rest in peace.🙏🙏🙏

Prayers for and heartfelt condolences to the victims' families. It's important to remember the victims, but just as important to remember the one rescue diver who died trying to recover them. Hats off to the expert diver team who risks their lives to bring the trapped divers home. I cannot the horror they must have experienced knowing they were going to suffocate to death as soon as their air tanks emptied and one of them knew they were the last one.

The best thing about cave diving is you don't have to do it.

Manslaughter....how? They killed themselves? Are they going to exhume the corpses for trial?

Why manslaughter charges - and against whom - when these divers went of their own volition, diving deeper than regulations allowed?

Diving is a very high risk sport....

I don't want to think or even imagine the deaths that these young Italian boys suffered, absolutely distressing

It’s nonsense to claim they were mysteriously “sucked inside.” They drowned in the cave after ignoring fundamental diving procedures and safety protocols. I am a TDI Divemaster and TDI Extended Range tech diver. Diving to 50–60 m with a single 12 L tank on air is already extremely reckless even in open water, let alone inside a cave. At those depths, severe nitrogen narcosis is inevitable. After only around 10 minutes of bottom time, they would already have faced roughly 40 minutes of decompression obligations during ascent. Most likely, they would not even have had enough gas remaining to complete those decompression stops safely, putting them at serious risk of decompression sickness even if they had exited the cave. To then enter an unfamiliar overhead cave environment without a permanent guideline — where disturbed silt can instantly reduce visibility to near zero — was nothing short of suicidal.

They ran out of air, not oxygen. The really bizarre part is that they dove to 180 feet on air with a single tank and then entered the cave and then proceeded deeper into the cave. WTF were they thinking? If you're a scuba diver you know how incredibly stupid this is because at that depth your air will only last about 10 minutes at most if even that.
