"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" means to be grateful you've been given a gift and not look too closely at imperfect details. Horses were often inspected for issues they might have, but a very minor one is to inspect their teeth for signs of a problem. If you're being given a horse, something incredibly valuable, looking it over so much that you're checking the teeth is considered rude. It's like being given a car and complaining that the windows roll down slowly. "Have your cake and eat it too" has been somewhat lost in translation and language drift, because we often use "having" to mean "eating" in the case of food. What it originally meant is that you can't have the cake for display and also be able to eat and enjoy it. Think of it like wanting to both Have a Mint Condition Pokemon card *and* play it in a deck without sleeves or a protector. The second thing overrides the first.

Since plenty of people already explained the Horse Gift, I’m only going to comment on the Cake. While what some people have commented is fine enough, I think it’s more accurate to explain it as a Beautiful Cake like a Wedding Cake. That it is so beautiful that you want to keep it and cherish it, but it is also meant to be eaten for the celebration. So while you might have that beautiful cake initially, once you eat it, it is gone for good. This is why a lot of of modern weddings will make sure to either take extensive photos of the cake before eating it, or have a separate cake for the guests be made, so that the main cake can be enjoyed as a memory and/or an art piece.

It's kind of odd how bad Hitmontop was in Gen 2 but after massive help it became a huge VGC Pokemon in Gens 4 and 5. Getting a set-up move early on is kind of crazy
