"Action of some kind is surely required," remarked Irish football pundit Richie Sadlier on RTE Sports on Thursday, after fans protested against Ireland's upcoming matches against Israel in September and October. During the friendly between Ireland and Qatar at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, fans threw tennis balls onto the pitch with messages reading "stop the game," protesting the upcoming UEFA Nation's League fixtures, the first of which due to take place in Dublin in September. Sadlier supported calls to cancel the matches, highlighting Israel's "genocidal campaign" in Gaza and the need for stronger action. His fellow commentator Stephen Kelly added that the protests would continue, saying it is likely that the games will happen "behind closed doors" in order to manage the backlash. Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that Ireland can't be "self-defeating," acknowledging the desire to cancel the game but saying that it should go ahead so as not to "damage ourselves unnecessarily". What an incredible human being. Well done that man.
As an Irishman WE HAVE TO STOP THIS GAME. In anyway possible, no Israeli flag can be raised on Irish soil. We stand with Palestine against a GENOCIDAL state. WE WILL SHUT IT DOWN!!!
Boycott Israel just like S Africa was boycotted!
Ireland and Spain are the countries actually standing up.
Sports boycotts played no small part in bringing down the apartheid regime in South Africa, it can be done again
From Scotland...Free Palestine 🏴🇵🇸🇱🇧🇮🇷🇾🇪🏴
Hear hear 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Stop the match.
BOYCOT DIVEST SANCTIONIZE
Boycott. Don't play the game. Act. Refuse to play Israel at football. 💚🇵🇸🇮🇪💚🙏🕊🕯
Thanks Ireland - we love you😢🙏🏼💚🩵❤️🪖🕷️🤲🏼
Values mean nothing unless you lose something in defence of them. Take the sanctions. There is a reason why Irish people feel so strongly about this, the history of Ireland and Palestines are intertwined. Take the sanction, don’t play the game. Be able to look able to look yourself in the mirror in 20,30,40 years time and say to yourself “I did the right thing”, no matter how small or insignificant a football match is, do the right thing.
I still don’t understand why teams even walk onto the pitch against them??
Thank you Ireland for standing up for what is right
This game Should NOT take place! Under any circumstance 🇮🇪🌍
I was listening to rte1 radio this afternoon, and had to listen to multiple Irish people talk about the legitimacy of ignoring what is happening in Gaza because of potential consequences to the team, or potential financial impacts on the upcoming UK+Ireland Euros. It's reassuring to hear something other than passivity on our TVs.
Powerful!
AS A SAMOAN🇼🇸 I STAND PROUDLY WITH IRELAND🇮🇪 AND PALESTINE🇵🇸🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Well done Richie Sadlier!. The best explanation I've heard. Come on IRELAND! Refuse to play.
👏 stop that game
Well said
