The great escape is one of the worst examples of Hollywood history. A film that was advertised at the time as a largely historic account. The film actually depicts a heavily fictionalized version of the mass escape by British Commonwealth prisoners of war from the German POW camp Stalag Luft III in World War II, which had no American POW's in the camp despite having an American as the hero. The film was heavily criticised by those who actually were POW's in the camp, as many of those who escaped and were recaptured were executed, and thought the film was in bad taste and disrespectful to the memory of those who died.

The Great Escape!!!! Excellent movie. Based on true events. Some of the actors actually lived through it and they had survivors come in and give their stories to make sure they were depicting it all as accurately as possible.
