How on earth would anyone steal a fire hydrant?#ChicagoFire

As someone that has installed and maintained hydrants. If you were to hook one to a truck like shown, your truck would lose. While they are made to shear off, it takes a real lot of force to do so. Also never worth that much for scrap, worth $4 to $6. And really most scrapyards will not take them, railroad steel, manhole covers, and storm grates. Cannot imagine anyone stupid enough to work that hard to steal something worth so little that we all know saves lives. Do better hollywood.

so.. the house of a politician catching fire and unfortunatly cant be put out due to missing hydrants might motivate em.

No reputable scrap yard is going to buy a fire hydrant. They’d flag that as theft

That little tracking device being able to transmit its location while inside of that fire hydrant is the biggest lie in this video

See, the fire fighters around here would put trackers in them... just so a few can get some bats and make sure the person knows the severity of taking fire hydrants that could literally save lives and livelihood

Nowhere in the world would that small amount of metal be worth a hundred bucks at a scrap yard at least!?

It’s a billion dollar lawsuit if the fire gets out of control because there are no fire hydrants on every up pipe where they’re supposed to be.

Hydrants are much more that just what you see. The valve is deep underground and attached to the top of the hydrant with a long rod.

Whoever wrote this scene doesn’t understand firefighting 500 gallons of water will create 850,000 gallons of steam you put fire out with steam

About 15 years ago I worked with a Non-Profit Organization (NPO), the City refused to install a fire hydrant bc the cops were trying to gain control of their emergency supplies designated for seniors. The NPO bought their own fire hydrant and sent me 200 miles (one-way) over state lines to get it. It took up the entire back of my Ford Explorer with the seats laid down, and really ate into gas mileage. Fire hydrants are not easy to move, nor carry. The selling place actually taped the receipt & papers inside my driver side back window in case I got stopped. While working for that NPO, I would get sent long distance for the weirdest things bc dealing with local burearucrats was tedious, like a back cargo area (Explorer again) and a 6x8 trailer of watermelons that had been donated to them. A local politician stated that he wanted the trailer "redirected" to the City swimming pool for his daughter's birthday party, instead of a bunch of senior citizens & disabled. Much better times, pay was good tho, the fire hydrant was a $500 "courier pay" + gas + $250 bonus, if I could be back in time to meet the installer. Sometimes, it was "simple" stuff like patient medical records or an envelope of forms for a patient under-going Chemo and they wanted me recording the paperwork being given to the recipient.

Make it a felony with a MINIMUM of 5 years jailtime no parole no leniency.

That yard operator looks like he might have a couple hundred thousand in property to seize...

This is actually happening right now in the US. (certain) groups of folks that are not originally from the States are just stealing them off the streets without repercussions and costing the people a valuable resource

take the hydrant from in front of a rich neighborhood and see how fast funding appears
