I used to think this too, until I realized a few things. In the film, Coraline tried to go to the old well in the other world but she couldn't. In the real world, the cat couldn't talk. Yes, he can still meow in the other world, but in the real world, when Coraline was in danger, he never said a word. It's always night in the other world, no matter if Coraline went there late at night or in the afternoon. I feel like the ending has so many references to the other world that it's hard to tell if she escaped or not. But in my opinion, I think she escaped and Coraline is just seeing her world in a new perspective

I just realized when coraline first sees the tunnel it looks magical luring her in but when she realizes the other mothers true intentions she truly sees the way the tunnel looks

Another detail: In the beginning, when the other mother is making the Coraline doll, the doll originally looked like Wybie’s grandmas twin sister. So that must mean she uses the *SAME* doll, but renews it every time a new kid comes!

I think the ending references things from the other world as much as it does, so that we can see how powerful the connection between the two worlds is and better yet how thin the line between the two worlds is. I think that the hands being pulled apart symbolises that the other mother’s grip on Coraline is finally loosening up. The garden may be barren and look ugly, like the other mother, but it will be soon be covered in beautiful living flowers. The cat is overall a mystical creature that is able to sense and travel between worlds and the well may very well be another portal, but it’s not a portal our protagonists are willing to go through any time soon and at the beginning it was mentioned that it was really deep, implying that whatever goes down there will most likely remain down there. It’s a positive, but open ending imo 🙂

For those who don’t know Coraline actually did escape the other world the first few times it actually was a dream that the Belem made. She made a dream of Coraline experiencing the other world as fun as bright and colourful. But the Belem made this to trick the kids that it’s like a place in Wonderland but it’s actually not that’s why Coraline transfers back to the real world because it’s just a dream the creators of Coraline made it confusing so it’s like she went through the portal and she didn’t come back, but it was actually just a dream, it was so realistic that she came back with the actual clothes, not just pyjamas. If you go look up Coraline dad’s song it basically tells you everything and how the Belem wanted to eat Coraline. The lyric “ she’s a peach” you were here and that’s the lyric that the mother wants to eat Coraline and sadly the mother/ beldem did success to eat the three ghost girls in the movieand at the start of the movie, the doll, what the ball that makes into Coraline is actually WBS grandmas twin didn’t resist to let the Beldam sew buttons into her eyes and when she does she keeps the eyes as you see in the movie she can Shapeshift and when she Shapeshift, she had normal eyes and she turned them into buttons so that’s a factor that the beldem was actually the person who caused the car accident. Also in the movie at the beginning Wybie said that if anyone fell down the well that they would see a sky full of stars even if it's morning. In the other world it is only night time. So that might be the portal it looks like it and its always night on the other side

Coraline actually never escaped, in the book that a friend of mine has and read, the boy never existed in the first place, the garden was still there when she tried to escape from the dimension she was, the hand clouds, and also the gloves for what I have noticed so far still were there, she is trapped there, I dont remember if the wiki says that she has Schizophrenia or not, but yeah, she never did escaped.
