Though Fight Club and Gone Girl are phenomenal films, I've just always been fascinated by style of this film. There's so much going on on a psychological level and lots of things that we need to unpack. John Doe is even hidden in a scene and there's lots of things to uncover. So join me as we breakdown the movie and talk about all the hidden details in it. title Ok so if youve been following these breakdowns for a while then youll know rain in films is something we often touch upon. Films like Blade Runner, The Batman and even Alien Romulus, they all use rain in a symbolic way. (12:55) Typically it represents the oppressive nature of somewhere with it beating down on the characters. In Se7en its no different with Rain being constant throughout. However the seventh day has the sun coming out which is when we learn whats going on. It not only showcases the truth being revealed but also how John Does reign is over. Shoutouts to Edward Doomington on reddit for pointing out how this also mirrors Dante's Inferno. That happens in the divine comedy which is a book that Somerset checks out at the library (27:03) In it we follow Dante and Virgil as they travel through the 9 circles of hell. These can be seen in the photocopy Somerset makes which gets some attention later on (29:10).

He uploads Se7en on December 13th, or, 12/13. The square root of 1,213 is 34.83, which naturally you round up to 35... divided by 5 because today is Friday and both begin with "F", and that brings us to SE7EN! He really thought no one would notice. ...I'm on to you, Paul.
The only unrealistic thing in this entire movie is that John Doe would be able to get a delivery company to actually deliver a package at the time specified.
Why were movies in the 90s so damn good? I feel like this was the golden age of film. So many movies that are worth watching 100 times. I've been meaning to watch Seven again recently, and now I have to.
“This aint even my desk” is my favorite part of this movie. I don’t know why.
this is the movie for me at a young age that solidified morgan freeman and brad pitt as some of the greatest to ever do it.
You mentioned the dead dog at the end of the film but that also gives us probably one of the only gags in the film. When Kevin Spacey casually says, "I didn't do that".
My mind is always blown knowing this came out in 1995. So ahead of its time and shot incredibly well. Fincher is a master.
This movie is amazing. Everything is in its place. There is a constant feeling of oppression and dread hanging over the film. 10/10
Tone, directing, pacing, story all aged gracefully. One of the best crime dramas ever.
Uh, at 9:20 brad pitt doesn't say "one in five" dead bodies are found alive at a crime scene, he said "Don't know, how many times did Barney Fife found dead bodies that aren't dead." Barney Fife being the sad sack comic relief cop on The Andy Griffith Show, who was always messing up. Pitt's character was referencing how the previous murder victim turned out to not be dead on his mattress; a fact missed by the inattentive cop who discovered him.
A Breakdown of Seven on Friday the 13th😂 I’m here for it! Thank you Paul!!
Se7en is what you would call, a perfect movie. An absolute masterpiece.
"he wanted to make a movie that scarred its viewers" too right. i've only watched it once, i don't think i'm brave enough to watch a second time
9:20 - Mills doesn't say 'one in five'. He says 'Barney Fife', the character from The Andy Griffith Show..
Fight Club feels like it takes place in the same world as Se7en. It is the darkness, everything feels filthy and no one seems to be happy. People are attracted to the Fight Club to feel something, even if it just pain or fear.
Heat came out the same year also, a great year for movies...Seven, Heat and Usual Suspects three of my favourites
The way Morgan Freeman looks at the pint glass with wine in it is my favorite scene of the movie.
The "6" when Doe appears could reference him committing the 6th sin in his sequence, with Mills being the 7th.
Divorced now, but at the time I was married, my wife at the time turned to me at the end and wanted to know what would happen to Detective Mills, She said it in a way. Fond memory. My wife and i loved movies like this. And its sad to be divorced now for 20 years.
