Throughout this video I wanna go through the movie and talk about the creepy hidden details that you might have missed. Peeling back the skin of this movie actually revealed a lot of hidden things and some deeper symbolism that makes it even more terrifying. Now the film is of course based on the book of the same name which I re-read for this breakdown. It offers a couple of extra insights to the characters that make them even more sinister than what we see on screen. Though the film is packed with them the first creepy detail I wanna talk about's in the poster. Voted by Premiere as being the 16th greatest movie poster ever made it has a subliminal image within it. If we zoom in on the pattern on the moth's head we can see that these are women arranged to look like a human skull. This is actually Salvador Dali's In Voluptas Mors and it plays into the themes of the film. Buffalo Bills is fascinated with Moths and Butterflies, especially their transformation. Bill wants to become a woman and thus women being on the Death Head moth has a deeper layer to it. This Death Head marking is also a reference to Edgar Allan Poe's The Gold Bug. The bug in that story is supposed to signify change and redemption with the character Legrand believing that it's gonna alter his life for the better.

This is one of my favourite films. The funny thing is, that he hints all the details at her all the time, because he is a genius and probably assumes, that the director is listening. He hopes that she catches on, but sadly she doesn't. It's a great example of genius people not understanding that others often don't get what they think is obvious and normal. I really love the character of Hannibal Lecter, it really shows the fine line between genius and madness, as he's using his intellect in a destructive and horrible way. I remember reading the book and thinking - what could this man have achieved if he used his knowledge and gift for good?

3:31 Not a big deal but wanted to point out that Clarice didn’t often hear the screaming lambs but only heard them once. She states she didn’t know what the sound was until she crept into the barn and found them. This was the Spring Slaughter. She tried to open the pen and ultimately fails to save even one of them. And it is this screaming that haunts her. Not the silence that came after they were all slaughtered. The supposed silencing of the lambs doesn’t refer to the deafening silence of the dead lambs, it is her attempt or her hope that this recurring nightmare will go away when she succeeds in saving a lamb to be slaughtered- young Catherine is the soon to be slaughtered lamb that Clarice saves.

I always thought they lied to Clarice about lector's deal. She thought it was a legitimate deal and that they lied to her because lector would be able to tell right away that she was lying.

This is the movie that got me into movies. I watched it with my dad when I was 12 years old and my eyes were glued to the screen the whole time.

Officer Boyle (ie. Charles Napier) is not crucified, rather his body is staged to represent a butterfly, now completely transformed and taking flight above the 'open' cell (or cage) door. The bright light positioned directly behind his body to highlight the awesome transformation the audience is beholding. In butterfly anatomy the abdomen, cut open to draw attention to it, is where the butterfly's wings and legs intersect and is significant for its generation of flight. The red, white and blue ribbon/drapery is formed into wings that connect at the abdomen reinforcing this idea. Also the red, white and blue representing America: the land of Liberty (again, Boyle is free from the cage and now in flight...as Bill desires to be).

Excellent breakdown and insights. After all these years this book and movie are still full of metaphors upon metaphors all while maintaining its "creap" factor.

Silence of the Lambs is one of my favorite movies and I've seen it a few times for sure but had no idea there was so much attention to detail. Very informative and entertaining video. I subscribed to the channel based on this video alone. Hmm, let's see what the Shining has...

Bless you for remembering "Manhunter," a truly excellent film. It may have seemed to be the same story, but Graham and Starling were two VERY different sides of the investigator coin. Graham empathized, Starling used logic. The ends were the same, the prices much different. Very telling that Harris wrote a male character using empathy and a female character using logic, don't you think? I cannot recommend "Manhunter" enough. It is very, very close to a perfect film.

He sees her as rare, he values manners & honesty. She is the lamb that he saves. He knows the men want to use her as a sacrificial lamb if things go wrong. They want the credit for her work. While on the run he monitors her career & what men try to take credit for her work.

Something I noticed is that when we first see Catherine Martin in her car she's wearing a large ring and a chunky bronze bracelet. When we first see her in the well Buffalo Bill is wearing the bracelet, and when he's in the moth room you can see he's wearing her ring. I think we can assume the other rings and jewellery he wears is from his other victims.

Brilliant breakdown as always! Thank you for articulating everything that terrified me about this film. The way Anthony Hopkins looked directly into the camera is exactly why (among other things!) Hannibal Lecter is a legendary villain. Now off to watch it again and scare myself shitless 😮

I always believed that the cop/ guard killed and hanging from the makeshift jail cell (4:58) was positioned by Lecter to represent a moth. It's wings represented by the torn material and angle of his arms, NOT a crucifixion scene.

The performances in this film are astonishing. Hopkins and Foster are perfectly cast and thoroughly deserve their accolades. Thanks for educating us on all the little details we may have missed - it shows just how deserving this film is. I watch this often enough my wife is suspicious of me🤐

The SWASTIKA is one of the "finest" examples of rebranding in history. Cheers for the video.
