After picking up the 4k blu ray and revisiting it for this breakdown, I found a lot of incredible details and hidden things in it that seeped into my subconscious on a first watch, and this really elevated the movie far beyond the appreciation that I had for it originally. Scorsese has really crafted a masterpiece here, and throughout this video, we're gonna be breaking down why the film is so haunting. We'll of course also be talking about the ending and all of the clues that build towards it. Now I was someone who guessed the twist in the first scene on my first watch. The idea it was all in someone's mind is a trope that's been used in a number of films and shows like The Twilight Zone, Fight Club, The Machinist and so on. However, even though I think you can safely guess it in the opening scene, the film actually goes beyond the twist due to its complex characters and narrative. Even the title itself is layered, with Shutter Island being an anagram of truth and lies. If we're really reaching, it can also be re-arranged to say Ted Hunts Liars with Di Caprio's character going under the name Teddy Daniels. This is later changed up to become Edward Daniels, and we discover that he's actually called Andrew Laeddis which is also an anagram of Edward Daniels. Later on, when we meet Laeddis, we can see that he has a giant scar across his face that also goes through his eyebrow. One thing that you might overlook is that Teddy also has a cut through his eyebrow, and this was given to Dicaprio by the makeup department to symbolise that they are one and the same. “Is that Tommy from Power” was my mom’s exact reaction watching this movie a few days back. I had never seen it until now AND nothing prepares you for this mental maze 🥺
Your analysis is completely missing one critical thing. It is possible Teddy really came to investigate the island. There are many things that point to the island being evil. It is possible that teddy never had a wife or kids. There is nothing that rules out the original narrative. That is the most brilliant part of the movie and the reason it's one of the goats. It's like one of those optical illusions where you can see 2 faces or a vase.
The fact that he wears an oversized detective costume really sells it.
3:50 i have seen thid movie again i didn't remember that i have watch it before cause it was a long time ago and i think i was little and in this rewatch also noticed this, I already knew he was the patient cause when I saw the scenes my mind resurfaced thebplot twist but im didn't remember the whole movie. on all of those scenes Leonardo di caprio character was strange to me cause it was like we didn't belong there his whole persona when he was wearing the detectives clothes, he didn't fit into those scenarios.
They predicted 67
9:27 - I don't think she's warning Teddy, she's been told to keep quiet and she's replicating that instruction when she sees who she must not speak to. Like a child keeping a secret, they will tell that person they're keeping a secret.
10:58 Holy shit! 6🫴7🫴 67! Martin Scorsese does it again!
Its so crazy how many times we are told exactly what’s going on in the movie. But we refuse to accept it. Instead we perceive the people telling the truth as the villains of the movie. Now that is a great way to show denial.
The cave scene to me stands out because the lobotomy is never described to him until he meets the "real Rachel Solando", along with other information that is more or less discoverable on his own but its hard to believe that interaction was fantasy or a dream. One good movie for sure
I watch this many times before but just so happened to watch it again last night and when the patient 67 came up I was shocked because of all the six seven crap going on right now.
8:10 Storm is real . In a scene , The doctors were having a round table discussion about what to do with the prisoners in ward C during the storm .
When the guard has teddy in the willis jeep, he says something along the lines of 'as real as this storm' when its clearly a lovely sunny day.... Which to me says there was no storm...
This movie really shook me to my core the first time I saw it. It’s terrifying what psychotic delusions can do to someone. For us it’s just a movie, but for many, this is reality.
17:29 watching the movie with subtitles it labels that cop as an inmate to keep the audience in the loop as well
i was actually wondering why at 12:02 the staff is laughing when some question of teddy's is answered, which is highly unusual in a formal seating. now it made sense
Watched this again last night with my 2 sons who hadn’t seen it before. Great movie. A couple of additional clues/observations that I can’t see mentioned anywhere else are when Teddy is being driven into the grounds and notices the barb wire fence and states that it’s electrified. Chuck asks him how does he know and he says ‘I’ve seen something like it before’. When I first saw the movie this is the part when I thought it could be him. Also on the boat at the very start it purposely shows the chained handcuffs handing from the roof and the sounds of them clanging together , so clearly a boat used to restrain the patients. Great film to watch on repeat viewing!
This is one of my favourite movies but I’d never noticed the fit of Teddy’s clothes in comparison to the others! I read the book before the movie was released and can confirm the ending absolutely blew me away — I never saw it coming. But in movies I always spot the breadcrumbs and have it figured out quickly (like when I watched The Machinist)
Film is so good everybody liked it without getting it. I had no idea how layered the cinematography of that movie was. Bravo
A really cool detail I noticed on my last watch. It’s in Ward C, it’s when they first get there, and Teddy and Chuck slowly move through a very large but empty room. The scene is almost completely quiet, except for some faint droplets of water that sound like they’re more off to the side. But in the wide shot you can clearly see a lot of water falling from the sky lights and rafters. The scene is shot specifically showing the big splashes of water the sky lights make visible, but the sound doesn’t match. It’s another example of Teddy mentally blocking out water.
Thank you for your explanation as it was a bloody difficult movie to piece together
