The mom screaming when she found out her daughter died is hard for me to watch. Her acting is so good I believed it really happened....not for real, but suspended belief. Was some top notch acting there.

So my younger sister died in a car accident a few years back, I developed “secondary PTSD” and started having flashbacks to the accident I hadn’t been at, my mom whom I was living with went crazy and wound up spending two weeks in an inpatient ward, she cried so much for so many weeks that I started hallucinating sobbing noises when she wasn’t around (including when I spent two nights at a retreat house by myself), being the sibling your grief and pain is totally overshadowed by your parents’ loss (eg. at my wedding dozens of people talked to me about how hard it must be for my mom, not one person asked if it was hard for me), this movie is HANDS DOWN the most accurate depiction of what it all felt like. I cannot say it strongly enough. No amount of “realistic” Oscar-bait drama can compare to how incredibly validated and seen I felt watching Peter watch his mom floating in the air cutting her own head off. thanks for coming to my sibling loss ted talk PS my mom loves the movie too PPS toni is 👑

When she was banging her head on the attic door my jaw just dropped. First movie I seen in a long time that made me uncomfortable and afraid...awesome horror film.

This film was well done. I wonder how many people caught on to the realistic depiction of the father figure and how he was suffering in silence while trying to be reasonably considerate of his wife and son.

Hereditary is the heartwarming story of a guy and his friends helping him overcome his gender dysphoria.

I didn't notice the young classmate of peter's was in the cult, but his teacher was also there. i bet the person making the nutty nut filled chocolate nut cake chock full-o-nuts was in on it too.

I think that paimons "light" was supposed to look like the glare coming off of Annie's magnifying glass headset thingy that she uses when shes working on her model projects. Much like she uses it to manipulate her figures, paimon uses it to manipulate the family in the house.

this was the first horror movie in YEARS that made me scared to sleep with the lights off. Annie seeing her mother in the shadows was perfectly done and was the closest thing to what it actually looks like when you think you see something in the dark. so freaky, sends chills down my spine every time.

I dont think that Peter dies upon jumping out the window, just was hurt enough to be weakened for posession. Because his uncle Charles killed himself so his dead body could not be posessed by Peimon

I still believe Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for her role in this movie. She was absolutely phenomenal.

This film will become a cult classic. Toni Collette is PHENOMENAL & truly doesn’t get the recognition she deserves.

Ari Aster is a modern master. This and Midsommar are in an entirely different league than basically anything I've seen in the genre, like EVER. I am 35 years old and this is the first movie since I was probably 8 or 9 that has legitimately affected me the way a horror movie should. It's a masterpiece.

When Peter enters the house in the ending scene, you can hear the distant sound of the piano being tipped over. You can also hear a string being plucked. That piano string is what Annie used to cut her own head off.

Regarding Annie’s beheading: Since you covered the background noise of cultists moving through the house right before the family returns from the funeral, you might weant to review the scenes after Annie hanging out on the ceiling of Peter’s room. When Peter checks his parents’ bedroom, a piano can beard being slammed shut at 01:49:28. In the subtitles it’s called [loud bang]. When Peter walks down the stairs to the hall, the camera’s focus is initially set to the piano. It is shown broken with the keys’ piano wires sticking out. This is Annie’s work. She uses piano wire to decapitate herself later in the attic. Fun side note: the camera angle and expression on Annie’s face are an homage to THAT scene in Carrie (1976), Ari said in an interview [1]. You say the shadow seen after Peter’s jump out of the attic window is his soul leaving his body. I thought so, too, initially, until someone in the Hereditary subreddit pointed out that it’s actually the shadow of now headless Annie floating towards the tree house. Listen again closely. About eight seconds after the thump of Annie’s decapitated head falling to the wooden floor of the attic can be heard, we see the shadow. Its starting position is the attic window from which Peter jumped straight forward, landing with his feet pointing towards it and his head away from it. It’s not 100 % distinguishable but the shadow has no head. In the ending scene Joan addresses Paimon in Peter’s body as Charlie because this is the name Paimon has become used to as being addressed over the course of thirteen years. Ari said in an interview [2] that Paimon replaced Charlie from the moment she’s born. The thing is, he doesn’t know he’s a King of Hell trapped in the body of a human child. He might have an idea of it, as the bird crashing into the window in Charlie’s class scene suggests, but he’s not fully aware of it. You have to tell him who he is. That’s why Joan does it. We never get to experience the real Charlie. The only possible exception to this is the séance held in the Graham living room. At one point Annie speaks with a child’s voice. The screenplay [3] says on numbered page 78 “But her voice sounds different. It will now remind us - in inflection, in quality - of CHARLIE’S VOICE.”. We don’t know if this is Paimon playing a trick on Annie, Peter, and Steve, or if it’s the voice of the real Charlie whose soul might have been drifting through the æther since it was evicted from her body at birth. Of course this requires the séance to work like an actual séance works. The one in Joan’s home was fake, and the chalk’s movement either done by Paimon or some appliance.
