The movie centres on the Haywoods trying to prove that there's an alien spacecraft visiting their farm but they unearth something much much weirder. The movie is based loosely on the legends of Skin walker ranch which is a hotsite for paranormal activity. Over the decades several UFOs have been said to have visited the location but the movie changes things up to make the creature a living UAP that feeds on horses and humans. Just in the same way that Peele laced a lot of hidden imagery throughout Get Out and Us...like this...look, they're wearing a US flag...NOPE has a lot of subliminal stuff too. Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking it all down but if this is your first time here, I'm your host Paul aka the guy who's theories make you go NOPE, now let's get into the video. For example when we go and visit Gordy's Home at one point in the movie we can see panavision cameras all titled as we approach the set. Later on at Jupiters Claim we see that he's selling alien toys and masks which have head shapes similar to the tops of the cameras. If you think that's a reach then it's also important to bear in mind that these masks are later used by his kids to frighten the Haywoods. What you might not have noticed is that they're also wearing Monkey Costumes calling back to Gordy's. Cameras appear throughout the movie and there's constant talks about the Oprah shot, the impossible shot and so on and so forth. We see as the Haywoods set up cameras around their home and throughout we actually very much get a history of the device with us going through several digital, film and analogue models. Elements of Jean Jacket are also based on a camera and after the title card pops up we travel through what we learn is it's mouth. This is built to look like one of the first ever cameras created and as we travel through the passage we see the first ever motion picture. Funny that nobody (even you!) mentioned that in the last scene of the movie when she used the well to take photographs, she mechanically recreated a succession of pictures that would work as a motion picture should they be assembled, mirroring the fate of her ancestor except shifting the position as the "creator" and thus, the one to be remembered. :)
I don't know if you guys have heard before the phrase ''waiting for the other shoe to drop''. My grandparents use it a lot and it was the first thing that popped into my mind at that very beginning. For us it means waiting something bad to happen, or even more bad news. To me, the shoe was that. It was Jupe waiting for the shoe to drop, triggering Gordy and attacking him. And the alien eating him was the other shoe dropping.
One thing I noticed that nobody has talked about is the preying mantis. The preying mantis was blocking the cameras and when a preying mantis feels threatened or makes it self bigger and larger and can change shape, which is what the alien dose at the end when it finds a formidable foe in OJ, also, if you look up pictures of a preying mantis type you can see it actually looks like what the alien looks like on the end. If you want to look it up “orchid preying mantis “ Which is a deep connection because on the back of the jacket, on both sides are orchids.
When Emerald asked Jupe to look at his stuff he responded with, ‘su casa es mi casa’ which is not how the saying goes. He said ‘your house is my house’ which both foreshadowed him trying to buy their ranch and JeanJacket being territorial with the Haywood’s ranch.
The TMZ rider’s helmet is designed to look exactly the same as the light testing device at the beginning of the film that triggers the horse resulting in OJ’s firing. As soon as I spotted that I was like “yep, he gonna get eaten”
Emerald missing the “great” because she was subconsciously quoting her father is such a beautiful touch.
A small detail i noticed is that in the Kid Sheriff poster there's three kids, with one of them being black. Emerald asks whatever happened to that kid, but she's not given an answer. And when she accidentally photobombs the well, she's the third person in the photo and she's also black, but the other two people aren't happy about the inclusion.
One thing people seem to be missing about Jupe's character is before he reveals the horse Lucky he says under his breath, "You were chosen". I think this implies Jupiter didn't think that he had somehow tamed or reached an understanding with Gordy, but that he was literally blessed and chosen by God. So he essentially felt he was invincible in this scene, which is why he has joy on his face as his entire crowd is being devoured. Up until the final moments, he never believes he's going to be sucked up at all. Then an angelic analogue devours him lmao.
Maybe this is too obvious to mention, but I've watched a few of these videos and nobody ever brings it up: just before Otis dies a radio is playing in the background, and a newsreader mentions an ongoing search for some missing hikers. My guess is that the coin that killed OJ and Em's dad came from the pocket of one of those hikers.
Haven't seen anyone mention this yet, so I'm going to bring it up. Earlier in the movie, Em was opening up to O.J about the time she wasn't given the opportunity to train her first horse Jean Jacket. She was constantly living in her brother's shadow. In the flash back, he looked at her and did the "I'm watching you" signal. Towards the end, he gives her that signal again as a way of telling her that it's her turn with Jean Jacket. Even though she got full evidence of it's existence, she was more proud of the fact that she was able to accomplish that. Feel free to argue with me or tell me it's an obvious thing lol.
One thing I like about the movie, and can be extended to all of Peele's movies, is that they're straight horror movies but dont rely on the characters being traditionally unintelligent to drive the plot. In fact, the central characters show the capacity to think critically and learn, and this often is what leads to the resolution of the conflict. It creates an environment where the characters first need to figure out what's happening before the intelligent decisions can be made. There's no frustration from the audience, just us experiencing the horror in the confusion with them. Namely, there's horror in the confusion followed by horror in the realization of what's happening.
I’ve learned soooo many interesting easter eggs/deeper meanings in this chat and I just wanted to contribute one as well! If it hasn’t been said already, the one horse who survives is Lucky. There is so much symbolism the more I think about it, like when OJ tells the actor his name, she replies “Well is he?” Yep he was! And even Lucky has his “Nope” moment by refusing to leave the cage when Jean Jacket comes, just like Emerald and OJ.
Jordan Peele also said in an interview that he was inspired by the angels from Neo Genesis Evangelion, and this is *obvious* to anyone who has seen the 2.22 movie. Jean Jacket's physics is very similar to the angel Ramiel, which first shows up as a big diamond, but shapeshifts its body freely. Jean Jacket also has a "core" it is able to shift around its body, just like Ramiel has.
The fist bump with Gordy, on a literal level, is due to his training on set to do just that. And because Jupe's eyes are veiled by the tablecloth, Gordy doesn't kill him. But on another level, I think Gordy is giving Jupe the fist bump to say to him, "We were being exploited and I took care of the problem," Jupe being given the role of a token Asian-American actor on a cheesy sitcom (think of how the fist bump is commonly used in as a "yeah, we did it!" sort of gesture). Jupe misunderstands Gordy's gesture: he never realizes he, too, was being exploited, and indeed ends up becoming one of the exploiters as an adult.
I believe Jupe's name is especially coming in as Jupiter, is also important. Not only is it a massive astral body, but it's the one that has the giant Eye. It can't stop staring, defying the one rule when working with possibly dangerous animals. Which is exactly what Jupe does. Also I believe the only creature to live through its title card was indeed Lucky. Finally, we hear OJ specifically mention that "You don't turn your back on bears, you don't show red next to bulls, and you don't look wild animals in the eye, or at Jean Jacket specifically period". What does Jupe do? Wears a red jacket, turns his back on it multiple times, and stares directly at it. Also Jean Jacket itself looks like an eye from the underneath so it would make sense that looking at it falls into looking animals in the eye. Such a brilliant film.
I think another thing I noticed about the bad miracle - the father was hit by a coin straight in the eye, which is already a pretty small probability, for an object to hit one of two weak spots in the skull to the point of punching through the brain. Additionally, we see it lands on its side. If you’ve ever flipped a coin, landing it on that edge is almost impossible, but lo and behold, it lands on its edge in this man’s skull. Impossibility on impossibility
When OJ sees the pig on the roof, it made me think of the expression about how unlikely something is to happen, "When pigs fly". OJ comes across something that seems to be beyond possibility. It is only after Jean Jacket attacks him that he understands that the improbable has actually happened.
In a recent interview Jordan Peele said he made Jean Jacket's eye square after he consulted with a deep sea biologist and she told him that many sea creatures such as octopi have square eyes.
I feel like the shoe standing up also had another imagery built in. It had the one circular drop of blood on the left side (from the audience perspective). It was the eye on that left side that the coin pierced killing Otis Sr. The TMZ riders helmet also had one circular opening on that side of his helmet. The balloon mascot for Jupiters Claim was winking but the left side eye was the open one (it was a one eyed jean jacket eater!). Not sure if it’s significant but it was interesting.
Something else I thought was clever was how Emerald was the wildest character and constantly had animal references in her outfit. She was hard to control and chaotic. When she wasn't wearing something labelled with animal names she was wearing something with animal graphics or prints.
