It's by far my favourite Ari Aster film and though I've already done a big breakdown on it I thought that I'd revisit the movie to celebrate the release of Beau Is Afraid. You see back when I made that first video on it in 2020 I was still learning the ropes and since then we've bought new equipment, hired editors and just tried to up our game in terms of the level that we pick movies apart. I've never been that happy with the video because of how much I missed in that initial watch through and thus I've decided to return once more to the classic to unearth all of the hidden things within it. Throughout this video we'll be going through every little creepy detail, it's ending and also why I love the movie so much. Another detail that a lot of people miss. Is when Annie is having that dream and is walking to peter room. Her shadow on the floor is missing its head. Another foreshadow. Bravo Hereditary one of my favorite movies of all time.
The mom hiding in the corner made me feel the most uneasy of any horror movie ever.
The idea that even Peter’s friends were part of the cult makes a lot of sense, and is super creepy.
Hereditary is emotionally tense and raw, and Toni's performance grounds the audience unlike any other in horror.
This movie was WILD. I honestly I don't think I've ever seen anyone portray utter grief like Toni Collette did. What a gripping ride
Really nice video! Little addition: Annie doesn't use chicken wire to decapitate herself. It's a piano string. When Peter comes down we can hear the piano getting trashed and he walks past the broken piano in another shot.
This movie dude… That shot of the mom slamming her head into the bottom of the attic door literally made me stand up and get ready to flee.
I don't know if someone else already commented this but, another interesting thing is that clicking noise both Charlie and Peter make, that is a noise people make when trying to call a camel And what is Paimon always depicted riding, a camel I heard this in a Foundflix video about this movie (I think)
Also, as the narrator pointed out the hats on the wall, relating them to the three decapitated heads that Paimon carries, you’ll notice that after Charlie loses her head and her funeral is over, there are only TWO remaining hats on the wall, and the one that was orange (like Charlie’s sweatshirt) is no longer there, her head having been “collected” by Paimon. The other two heads will be that of the grandmother, once her corpse has been dug up and mutilated, and Annie, who severs her own head later while possessed.
I think the model house scenes also show how Annie is detached from her home life. She can't understand it from within and maybe feels powerless to control anything, so she creates these models where things make sense and she can give an order to the chaos. Of course, it's just an artifact that doesn't really address and can't solve the problem.
Peter's "friends" put that Dittany of Grete in the bowls he was smoking. That's why he was having such a coughing fit, and such a negative reaction to it. They were trying to make it easier for him to astral project, and get Paimon in his body.
the detail of the footprints is INSANE
One thing. Paimon is supposed to tell you the truth bout the universe, and all its secrets. That’s why, when Peter wakes up and sees his mom there she tells him she never wanted him, that was paimon. She couldn’t help herself but tell the entire truth to her pregnancy.
I don't think there's ever been a horror film I've seen that got as intense as hereditary's ending. The slow pace of the movie up until then made it even more disorienting and disturbing. Truly a masterpiece of the genre.
Wow, so many details that I've missed before.. especially those with Bridget! Well done, Paul! Excellent analysis of one of my all-time favorite horror movies. Keep up the good work!
that scene where in the background, you can see annie sort of floating out of peters room always made me feel SO uncomfortable and scared and i still don't know why. i think its just seeing her body move in such an unnatural way, so quickly but still completely silent. such a freaky movie
More easter eggs/details you might have missed: - Annie begins the movie dressed completely in black, but as the movie progresses she gradually wears more white until by the end she's dressed completely in white like her mother. - Annie makes a miniature of the scene of the accident, including a miniature charlie head on the road in a puddle of blood. Later on in the movie the camera pans over the diorama and the puddle of blood is still there but the severed head is missing, foreshadowing how the severed head was stolen by the cult. - Even though Charlie wears bright orange, her room is light blue, her bedspread is light blue, her coffin is light blue. When Annie reaches for a bottle of orange paint, it's the light blue one that tips over and spills on its own. This foreshadows how she tries to reach out for her daughter but ends up releasing something completely different out of her control. - Annie is very aggressive in forcing Charlie to go to the party with her brother, but when asked why, she scrambles to come up with a reason, almost like she's being compelled to make Charlie go without knowing why herself. When Peter asks her why again after the accident at dinner, she doesn't have an answer at all. - There are pairs of porthole windows throughout the house that resemble pairs of watchful eyes above the family. They are clearly in frame when something out of the protagonists' control is being carried out, such as during Steve's death, or in the diorama of Ellen trying to breastfeed Charlie. - There's a point in the movie where the reflected light that represents Paimon moves across the wall in the shape of a creature running on all fours. I can't remember exactly when this takes place but if you look for it it's hard to miss. - After Annie destroys her miniatures, Steve enters the room and asks "what's that smell?" He could be referring to spilled paint thinner all over the workshop, or it's possible he's starting to smell the rotting body of Ellen that's above the workshop. - There are two bird statues perched on the doorway in Charlie's room, another reference to bird motifs in relation to Paimon. Her room also resembles the treehouse in shape, and a skylight in her room casts a beam of light directly onto the desk where she poses the effigies. - If Paimon is a demon king, and Ellen is referred to as "Queen Leigh" by the cult, she may have been intended to be his bride, which is why she was wearing a wedding gown in her photo album. Maybe this one was supposed to be obvious but I didn't draw the connection immediately so I thought I'd point it out. - 13:00 The camera follows her raising her hand, which is in a pose that resembles Paimon's hand symbol: two straight fingers and two bent ones. - Not an easter egg but I just wanted to appreciate the attention to detail that went into the prop of Steve's burned body: Burned bodies' arms frequently bend in right angles at the elbows, which was included in the prop. It adds extra realism to the gore, so props to the prop department.
A well-done update on your original breakdown of Hereditary. Also, congratulations on all the upgrades you've made over the years to bring even better quality to the videos on the channel. Cheers. :)
I've never seen anyone mention this before, and I only noticed it tonight on my 4th rewatch... When the accident happens, it's caused by a deer carcass laying in the road, and Peter serves to miss it, which is how Charlie hits her head on the pole at the side of the road. After Peter has stopped the car in the middle of the road, he can't bring himself to look into the backseat, but his gaze goes from the review mirror to the road... Out in the distance, you can barely see naked people running, illuminated by the headlights. So they obviously planted the deer carcass in the road. There are other times when you can see their naked bodies scattered all over the woods outside the house. You can sometimes see them outside a window. They are performing little creepy tasks throughout the entire movie!
It’s not chicken wire Anne uses at the end, it’s piano wire because you can hear her smash it just before. Another amazing subtle detail of this movie!
