The Horror of 'Hidden in Plain Sight'

Film and Animation

When a director hides something creepy in the frame, and you never notice it until your second, third, or fourth watch....that's a special feeling. But there are different variations to this trick; sometimes, it's plain old blink and you'll miss it, and at other times, it's a bit more complicated. So let's delve into the different ways a film may try to affect your unconscious, with lots of cool examples, and of course, one excellent horror film you probably have never seen before. For the most part, this video avoids major spoilers, and even for the warning titles at the start of the video, I personally think the spoiler is quite minimal in the grand scope of things, but hey, you can never be too careful. So with that, here's the list of films that come up in different sections of the video, specifically those that are NOT explicitly stated by me. For detailed spoiler warning, refer to the comment section! And as it goes nowadays with my videos, please comment something with 'blinkity blink' if you've reached this point in the description, and I'll make sure to do a thumbs up in front of my monitor, knowing you're a thorough person with patience who cares to read everything. Okay bye. Films NOT mentioned by me explicitly, but are shown in the video INTRO - Smile 2, The Conjuring 2, Oddity, Insidious Chapter 2, The Menu CHOCOLATE - Hereditary, Insidious Chapter 2, The Conjuring 2, The Menu 10 SEC TO BLINK - Friday the 13th Part VII, The Babadook, A Tale of Two Sisters SAM & BOB - A Cinderella Story, Fight Club, Late Night With The Devil, Sixteen Candles BLINK & YOU'LL MISS IT - Deep Red /// THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE is now streaming exclusively on MUBI (almost globally). Insidious was one of the few films that actually had me scared the first time I watched it

Seeing the ghosts hidden in plain sight was one of my favorite things about "The Haunting of Hill House" Man that was such a great series.

You jumpscared me not once, but twice during that intro.

The heaviest-handed use of Blink and You'll Miss It was in This House Has People In It in my opinion, there's like 10 different moments there's something to see but only for like 2 frames lol

I got a real life “baby” jump scare recently! I work in a coffee shop. I decided to take the rubbish out the back, their were no new customers needing a drink, maybe 3 people inside. I was gone for all of 30 seconds, and a regular was on some steps waiting for me when I had turned around to go back to the till. Scary if you were not expecting it!

Those "When you see it..." pictures from way back when made me super scared of this trope. The famous one of the black and white picture in this basement still gives me chills.

R point! I've fallen in love with that movie since I realised just how incredibly they did their blink and you'll miss it. (And I love you doing the same in your description of it)

Exorcist 3: Legion has an excellent jumpscare at the nurses station. One of the few that has a lasting, memorable effect.

1:55 For Hereditary IDK what kinda print I had but on my TV it was EXTREMELY clear that there was his mom in the background like I thought huh that's neat, but damn if that's how it should look then that's creepy

11:14 I see what you did there, sneaking some chocolate on the periphery of the frame.
