In Season 3 of The Chettis of South-east Asia, I begin sharing the untold stories behind the Indian Peranakans — also known as the Chetti Melaka. This series goes beyond food and recipes. It is about memory, identity, oral traditions, family histories and the urgent need to preserve a rare community whose numbers continue to dwindle with every passing generation. Drawing from more than 50 years of self-funded research, journalistic experience and lived heritage, I hope to shed light on the deeper roots of the Chetti Melaka — tracing their story back almost 2,000 years.
