The human cost of Manipur’s unfinished conflict | Documentary | BBC News India

Activism

In 2023, the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur was torn apart by ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Since then, more than 260 people have been killed, tens of thousands displaced, and entire neighbourhoods divided by buffer zones and security checkpoints. In April, fresh violence reignited the crisis. From the killing of two children in a devastating blast, to protests led by women demanding justice, to the way rumours fuel violence, BBC correspondents Raghvendra Rao and Devashish Kumar report from the ground, capturing grief that refuses to fade and a conflict that continues to shape everyday life, three years on. Across hills and valleys, the divide runs deep. Relief camps have become permanent shelters. Trust is broken. Fear lingers. Political promises remain, but for many in Manipur, there is still no closure. Watch our documentary on the human cost of this unfinished conflict. I was in Manipur last year in January 2025. I am a Nepali and the way Manipuri police looked down on me there is disgusting. The police officers who looked like they were from outside of Manipur were really kind but I couldn't fathom why the Manipuri guys in police have so much attitude. They think they have guns in their hands and that's power for them. Such a stupid mentality. I also found in the Kuki majority area some young guys in their late teens and early 20s carrying guns and pistols and showing off their luxurious cars. How can such irresponsible young guys have access to the guns? The guns access should be immediately scrapped. Back in Nepal we never had access to any firing weapons. It seems violence is embedded in the heart of Manipur.

Absolute disgrace. Modi and his godi media does not even acknowledge the burning of Manipur. They will blow trumpets on their success and put blanket on their failures. Govt has failed Manipur.

Thank you BBC. But you've missed the most important part. The Kuki community will never go back to the place where they were hunted like wild animals while the state security forces looked another way. We will never go back to live where our loved ones were killed in cold blood with nowhere to run. at the same time, we will never allow them to live with us again in the hills because we allow them to buy land and live with us in the hills. but they call us enemies, tenants, refugees, monkeys, and what not. Mr. Biren Singh did the violence intentionally. He didn't act. Even our ministers and IPS officers were attacked. He knew it. But he is roaming free. This is the government of India. To establish a permanent solution, divide Manipur into 3 Union Territories for the Kukis, Meiteis and Nagas...
